Harnscombe Ringing Centre
Church bell-ringing centre
Bell-ringing centre site that draws change rows for an eight-bell tower and calculates ringing time and bell weight
How it was made
A change-ringing centre at a church tower in Harnscombe, a fictional village in south-west England. The setting is one tower of eight bells and one simulator room.
Its purpose is to tell you the method, how long a ring takes, bell weights and remaining places. Six numbered vertical columns form the skeleton, and the column numbers are the navigation.
Cream text sits on a russet #6E1B22 ground, and sky blue #9FC9E8 is used only for lines, links and focus. Type is two faces, Fraunces and DM Mono.
The change grid is computed by expanding place notation by its rules. With 4, 5, 6 or 8 bells and Plain Hunt or Plain Bob, it draws up to the 112 changes of Major.
Only the chosen bell's path is drawn as a blue line over 600ms. Press Play and the rows step down at 320ms intervals.
Ringing time is the number of changes times seconds per change. 5,040 changes × 2.6 s comes to 3 h 38 min.
Bell weight is estimated from the cube of the diameter times a thickness factor, with the nearest note. The 13 pages, with a directory of 24 towers, practice and course sign-up and 8 plates, are generated from data.
